Rev. MacArthur H. Flournoy IV, MDiv, is an executive leader, interfaith chaplain, and health policy strategist with four decades of service. Ordained in the United Church of Christ and completing doctoral research in African Traditional Religion, he is preparing for placement in Lagos, Nigeria from December 2026.
His Story
1960 · Los Angeles
Born the eldest of seven, learning early what it means to care for others.
1988
Diagnosed HIV positive. What could have been an ending became four decades of survival, service, and witness.
1990 · Nigeria
Welcomed two children into his family in Nigeria, beginning a lifelong bond with the country.
1994 to 1998 · San Francisco
Director of Prevention Services at the San Francisco AIDS Foundation, directing twelve health programs and supervising a team of twenty eight professionals, with trainings delivered in Australia, Italy, and Switzerland.
2004 to 2007 · Sacramento
African American Public Policy Coordinator for the California Department of Health Services, overseeing eighty statewide healthcare contracts serving communities impacted by HIV and AIDS.
2007 to 2011
Legislative Advocate for the California State Conference of the NAACP, representing seventy two branches, then Northern California Regional Director for the California Council of Churches.
2011 to 2017 · Washington DC
Director of Faith Based Partnerships and Mobilization at the Human Rights Campaign. National spokesperson at Harvard University, the U.S. State Department, the NAACP, and the 50th Anniversary of the March on Washington.
2021 to 2023 · Honolulu
Case Manager and Chaplain at the Institute for Human Services, serving people facing homelessness, trauma, and mental health crises, and supporting the resilience of two hundred and thirty staff.

Ordained a Reverend in the United Church of Christ, after thirty years of interfaith and ecumenical ministry.

Led national campaigns that helped secure Supreme Court affirmed equality laws, and increased public policy engagement among people of color by thirty six percent.

These photographs are his own, made across Lagos, Abeokuta and Ibadan on two visits in 2025 and 2026. Abeokuta and Ibadan sit in the Yoruba heartland, where Ifa, the tradition at the centre of his doctoral research, is a living practice rather than an archive.
